For those of you who have not spent the days leading up to Christmas in Germany, it is a little bit difficult to imagine what you are missing: the spicy aroma of cinammon, coriander and cloves in the air, traditional Christmas pastries made from nuts and almonds accompanied by a hot cup of tea whilst you warm your hands with freshly-roasted chestnuts. Large copper tubs containing caramelised almonds, mulled red wine and the fragrance of ginger bread continually remind you that Christmas is not far away. All of this takes place in a veritable sea of lights: stars are twinkling, Christmas carols are being sung and the sound of organ music from a nearby church echoes through the air.
Christmas in the Palatinate: a fascinating world, a unique atmosphere bringing back childhood memories.
