Living in Neustadt

Neustadt, with its 56,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized town along the German wine route, located at the heart of the Palatinate and incorporates nine neighbouring wine villages with more than 2.000 hectares of vines along with an impressive culture of wine.
It is a place where life is simply blissful and where more and more people would like to spend their holidays.
First documented around the year 1100, the town has been of great importance again and again throughout history.

Even today, there are historic aspects relating to Neustadt that are well worth exploring. For instance, the historic old part of the town boasts the largest and oldest collection of half-timbered buildings in the whole of the Palatinate region.

Traditions and culture are reflected at the numerous wine festivals as well as events such as musical performances, gastronomic extravaganzas, weekly markets, readings, theatre performances (including open air) and Germany’s largest vintner´s procession during the German Wine Harvest Festival in October.

The hustle and bustle of life in Neustadt can be experienced in and around the historic market square, the “Juliusplatz” and the gothic “Stiftskirche” ( the town´s symbol).

It is especially lively on market days when local traders set up their stalls offering Palatinate specialities. The catholic “Marien” church in neo-gothic style is also situated close by. Just off the main square are narrow alleyways with half-timbered houses and small courtyards where cultural life takes place particularly during the courtyard culture event (“Hofkultur”).
